Trainee wellbeing today could not be more significant. The recruitment and retention crisis features in the news and social media nearly every day. The government has missed its secondary teacher recruitment targets for nine out of the past ten years. Nearly 40,000 teachers left the profession by the end of 2022 for reasons other than retirement. This has been further highlighted by the recently updated Staff Wellbeing Charter from the DfE. The charter highlights the importance of the wellbeing and mental health of all teaching staff. It also states that improved staff wellbeing is a key outcome of educational policy. 74% of staff have considered leaving the profession entirely in the last year. This is why we need SCITTs, PGCE and Online providers for teacher training to be investing in the Wellbeing of their next cohort.
This was why the CoachED Wellbeing Coaching model was created. It is a fully resourced programme that is simple to understand and easy to embed into the SCITT training programme. It is already being used by SCITTs across the country with Mentors having dedicated Coaching time every two weeks purely to look at Trainee Wellbeing. The resource provides everything you need to enable Mentors to coach Trainees, using an empathetic approach. It is not instructional coaching. It focuses on the person, reflecting on themselves and empowering them to take ownership of moving themselves forward in their training. This will undoubtedly lead to better mental wellbeing, better retention of trainees and ultimately better outcomes for SCITTs. It runs over the three terms in three succinct phases, all fully resourced and ready to implement. It fits perfectly into a 30 minute session, once every two weeks.
We have been featured in Evidence Based Education and SecEd.
