Background

As you are aware, in January 2019 we published the Early Career Framework (ECF) which sets out all of the things that a newly qualified teacher (NQT) needs to learn and master in their first 2 years of teaching. To ensure NQTs’ Early Career Professional Development is built on shared national criteria, the government is funding a 2-year entitlement to professional development based on the ECF.

We wrote to you last October to inform you that we are giving schools in Bradford, Doncaster, Greater Manchester and the North East early access to this support from September 2020 and that we have selected four early roll-out providers to bring the framework to life in a blended programme of face-to-face and self-directed professional development for NQTs, along with new training for mentors. This 2-year programme will provide a step-change in the support on offer to NQTs and will ensure that their progression and learning is consistent, wherever their career takes them. We will be rolling the Early Career Professional Development out nationally from September 2021.

Update to schools

Today, we have written to eligible schools in the early roll-out areas to provide further information about how they can be involved. We have asked them to take a look at the packages on offer and register their interest on providers’ websites (these can be accessed by clicking the logos of the providers below). We have also invited them to events where they can meet the providers and find out more about the offers in their area. Please see the dates and sign-up pages we have shared with them below.

Tuesday 24th March 2020: Bradford

Friday 27th March 2020: Doncaster

Tuesday 31st March 2020: the North East

Friday 3rd April 2020: Greater Manchester

For those who cannot make it to one of the events in person, there is a webinar on Wednesday 22nd April.  To secure a place for the webinar click here.

Further information can be found on our gov.uk page. If you receive queries from members of the public in ERO areas, they will be able to attend these events, or we are happy to receive queries about the Early Career Professional Development via ECF.Delivery@education.gov.uk. We will be sending out further updates about national roll-out in due course.
