Instructional coaching is a model of teacher development which bridges the concepts of mentoring and coaching, and which guides novice teachers through a series of expertly designed steps to improving their practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore and understand the evidence base underpinning the instructional coaching approach to mentoring;
  • Develop a model of instructional coaching underpinned by five key principles;
  • Consider how a novice teacher’s knowledge and skills based can be sequenced over time to maximise learning and development;
  • Understand how to put instructional coaching in action.
