Haybridge Alliance SCITT

Anita Jenkins is Director of Haybridge Alliance SCITT, which offers teacher training opportunities at host schools in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Worcestershire. Having achieved SCITT status in August 2015, Haybridge now works with 36 primary and 32 secondary schools. Alongside her SCITT role, Anita is also Deputy Head of the lead school, Haybridge High School and Sixth Form, and Director of the Teaching School.

“When we first decided to become a SCITT we had no help whatsoever – then we found NASBTT and realised they had a handbook with everything we needed to do,” Anita recalled. “We got the handbook, and went through it step by step, and NASBTT provided advice, guidance and a point of contact throughout the process. They have been positive in everything they do, and I advise any SCITT I engage with to join NASBTT. I am a complete advocate of NASBTT – they are effectively our right arm.”

Anita explained how NASBTT had provided a range of support, from preparing for a quality assurance visit from NCTL to now getting ready for Ofsted. “Things happen very quickly operationally when you become a SCITT,” she said. “Practically NASBTT have helped us with our compliance audit and SEND audit, and they will be particularly valuable as we go through Ofsted. We also regularly attend meetings and network with other SCITTs nationally. At these events you pick up gems, like the Department for Education’s presentation on the EBacc and PE subject trainees at the 2017 annual conference. We have also been to many training sessions, which always provide very insightful.”

However, Anita went on to single out the ‘reactive’ support available through NASBTT membership. “Importantly NASBTT are always there at the end of the phone if we are in a pickle – they are very responsive, all of the time,” she said. “The team are a knowledge bank, our ‘guru’, very approachable and lovely people to work with. Membership is good value for money and developments like the teacher educator qualifications can provide much needed structure and rigour that is not currently there.”
