Tauheedul Education Trust

Felicity Ackroyd is Deputy Director of Initial Teacher Training at the Tauheedul College of Teaching and Leadership, part of the Tauheedul Education Trust. The Blackburn-based institution is in its first year as a School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) provider and became a member of NASBTT in August 2016. Felicity has been in post for 12 months having previously led the PGCE at Liverpool Hope University.

“In joining NASBTT we wanted to get access to the leading national organisation for SCITTs and benefit from its knowledge, expertise and best practice,” Felicity said. “In our short time as a member, we have definitely had that. We have received direct support on leadership, and policies and frameworks, including general pointers on developing strong training for students and specifics such as SEND. Membership really helps us keep up to date with new SCITT initiatives, which is critical at our stage of development.”

Felicity has taken the opportunity to attend the NASBTT annual conference and administrators’ conference. “Both events were very well constructed and brought an opportunity to network with others in the sector,” she explained. “This is really valuable to me, coming from a university where you are very focused on programme delivery, whilst in a SCITT you have an overview of the whole process including marketing, recruitment and pastoral care support as well as the delivery. The quality of speakers at the conferences was excellent, including the Department for Education, the National College for Teaching and Leadership and UCAS, so some high-calibre presenters. The weekly blogs we get are also really useful – so much better than dribs and drabs of information.”

Currently focused on initial teacher training in Blackburn and Greater Manchester, spanning both primary and secondary schools, Felicity highlighted the potential to reach out into West Yorkshire, the West Midlands and East London where Tauheedul Education Trust has schools within its network. “Ultimately we want those in power to recognise the regional differences in teacher training and to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. Membership of NASBTT is a great vehicle to make that happen,” she added.
