Dear colleague
We are pleased to confirm permission to recruit to initial teacher training (ITT) courses for the 2019/20 recruitment cycle. You can view all the courses in which you have permission to recruit (including early years ITT) by logging into the new Trainee Teacher Portal (TTP).
What has changed for 2019/20?
For the 2019/20 recruitment cycle, we have issued permission to recruit for each individual course requested during the June request window. This is different from previous years, where we allocated ITT places for all courses (across all subjects and routes). Having permission to recruit to a course allows you to list this course on DfE’s new search service, ‘Find postgraduate teacher training,’ which goes live on 2 October. UCAS will accept applications to courses from 9 October.
You must have permission to recruit from DfE to list a course as open for recruitment and to access any DfE funding associated with training.
For the 2019/20 academic year, we have issued permission to recruit in two categories as follows:
Unlimited category
Recruitment to ITT courses in this category is unrestricted, and this applies to the majority of courses. When you log on to the TTP you will see a list of courses that you have permission to recruit to. You will not see any numbers as recruitment to courses in this category is unrestricted. For courses in the unlimited category, you can recruit as many trainees as you wish beyond any recruitment estimates given in June 2018 without having to contact DfE.
Allocated category
Recruitment to ITT courses in this category is limited by the number of places allocated by DfE. When you log onto the TTP you will see a list of courses in the allocated category that you can recruit to and will see the number of places allocated. You must not recruit beyond this number. PE (fee-funded) routes, undergraduate routes and early years ITT courses are in the allocated category for 2019/20.
The ITT allocations methodology: guidance for the 2019/20 academic year is now available on GOV.UK. Please read this document in full, as it contains important information on permission to recruit and allocating places for the 2019/20 recruitment cycle. A full list of courses (subjects and routes) and their categories is available at Annex A of the guidance.
FAQ’s about permission to recruit and ITT allocations are attached to this email. Please read this document in full before contacting us with questions.
Next Steps
To guarantee that a course is published in full in ‘Find postgraduate teacher training’ on 2 October, you must do the following by 18 September:
1. Set your courses to ‘Running’ on UCAS
You will have recently received an email from UCAS with details of how to do this. If you have already set your courses to ‘Running,’ you should now log into the TTP to check if you have permission to recruit to the courses you have set to ‘Running.’
If you have not already set your courses to ‘Running,’ you must do so by 18 September. Only courses set to ‘Running’ will appear in ‘Find postgraduate teacher training’ when it launches on 2 October, allowing applicants to apply to you when UCAS Teacher Training Apply launches on 9 October for the 2019/20 entry cycle.
2. Complete your information in Publish teacher training courses
Earlier in September, we sent you information on how to complete your information in “Publish teacher training courses”, the publishing tool for the new DfE search service. Enriching your course content is a vital step in helping potential teachers to get the information to help them decide whether your course is the right course for them. We strongly encourage you to provide as much detail as possible in your course information. If you don’t add all your content by 18 September, your course will still be published but in a basic form (containing only course titles, qualifications and course codes).
If you have not yet accessed the “Publish teacher training courses”, you’ll need to create a DfE Sign-in account first.
