NASBTT Member Council

NASBTT’s Member Council plays a vital role in ensuring that the voice of our membership is at the heart of everything we do. Bringing together experienced representatives from across the ITT sector, the Council provides valuable insight, challenge and perspective to help shape NASBTT’s priorities, services and policy engagement. Through their expertise and sector knowledge, Member Council representatives support us in responding to emerging issues, influencing national conversations and championing high-quality initial teacher training across the sector.

Our Member Council supports NASBTT with a range of activities, these include:

Sharing insight and advice on key topical issues affecting the sector
Inform and assist in the development of NASBTT products and services to ensure they are tailored for Members needs
Shape and informing NASBTT member surveys
Assisting with media requests
Meet in person twice-yearly to focus on key issues affecting the sector

The next Member Council meeting will take place in the summer term.

Tom Molloy
Director,
Tommy Flowers SCITT

Bio

Tom Molloy is Director of the Tommy Flowers SCITT, a medium-sized ITT provider in Milton Keynes offering primary and secondary courses, postgraduate apprenticeships, end point assessment services, assessment only and the L5 specialist TA apprenticeship. Tom has been leading ITT for 9 years, having previously been a deputy headteacher and taught across a range of primary and secondary schools. He is an external moderator and sits on the trailblazer group for the L6 teacher apprenticeship. His teacher education interests include post-observation feedback conversations, apprenticeships and combatting the de-skilling of teachers through off-the-shelf schemes. Outside education, Tom is a musician and a father of two boys who have both been taught by Tommy Flowers SCITT graduates.

Anna Beresford
Programme leader for ITT,
London East Teacher Training Alliance (LETTA)

Bio

Anna Beresford is programme leader for initial teacher training at London East Teacher Training Alliance (LETTA). She is also a qualified executive coach. Prior to ITT, Anna was a senior leader in schools of various sizes across Hertfordshire, Islington and Tower Hamlets. Anna has a particular passion for teaching English and has been an associate teacher for the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE). Anna has served as a governor in primary and secondary schools, including as curriculum chair.

Cathryn Mortimer
Director of Arthur Terry Teaching School Hub and Course Director, Arthur Terry SCITT

Bio

Cathryn Mortimer is Director of Arthur Terry Teaching School Hub and Course Director of Arthur Terry SCITT, an ‘outstanding’ teacher training provider in the West Midlands. Drawing on senior leadership experience in the secondary sector, she brings a strong track record in teacher development and wider system leadership. She also chairs the West Midlands ITE Partnership, working collaboratively with a range of providers to strengthen regional provision.

I am privileged to serve on the NASBTT Member Council, drawing on over 20 years of experience in initial teacher training across the North-East of England. Throughout my career, I have worked in partnership with a wide range of universities and SCITTs, taking on roles including mentor, link tutor, hub lead, primary lead, and now Director. This breadth of experience gives me a deep understanding of teacher development at every stage.

I am currently the Director of Teacher Training for the Carmel Teacher Training Partnership, where I support the delivery and quality of initial teacher training through our partnership of schools across the North-East. Alongside this, I contribute to school improvement as part of the Primary School Improvement Team for Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, working with 30 primary schools. My roots are firmly grounded in 30 years of primary education. I have taught across KS2 and served as a senior leader, KS2 moderator, Advanced Skills Teacher, and Specialist Leader of Education.

These diverse roles have shaped my commitment to ensuring that trainee teachers and mentors feel heard, valued, and supported. Their voices should guide and shape our actions as we continue to strengthen the profession.

Becky Rose
SCITT Director,

Bio

Becky Rose is SCITT Director for the Gloucestershire ITE Partnership (GITEP) based in Cheltenham. The SCITT offers secondary and primary courses for a range of routes, including part-time and employment based routes. Becky is a former secondary history teacher, middle leader and Specialist Leader in Education, and prior to taking up the role of Director was the SCITT's secondary programme lead and subject lead for history. In addition to being SCITT Director, Becky is also CEO of Teach Glos, an organisation providing professional development for schools, and an EEF Evidence Lead in Education for Gloucestershire Research School. She is the author of two NASBTT Mentor Development Modules focused on inclusion and a member of Belonging Effect's DEI in ITTE network. The SCITT is in the first cohort for the 'Increasing Diversity in ITT' pilot project with the Chartered College of Teaching and Mission 44.

Ben McGregor

Bio

I have worked in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) since 2012 and have a long background in secondary education. Over the years, I’ve been closely involved in developing school-led ITT, including setting up Schools Direct provision within my own school and working in partnership with others to build strong, sustainable training models.

In 2018, I worked with colleagues to establish Bradford Birth to 19 secondary provision, and in 2020 I became Head of Initial Teacher Training. My role now focuses on shaping the ITT curriculum, supporting schools and mentors, and ensuring high-quality training and support for trainee teachers across our partnerships.

I find working in ITT incredibly rewarding and care deeply about the sector and the people within it. I really value the work of NASBTT and am grateful for the guidance, challenge and support it has provided, particularly through re-accreditation. I hope, in turn, to contribute back to the work and values of the organisation through my involvement on the Member Council.

Kirsty Brooks
Head of Initial Teacher Training,

Bio

Kristy is in her fifth year as Head of Initial Teacher Training for Educate Group, having worked in the education sector since 2010.

She trained through Teach First, teaching science in an inner-city secondary school in Birmingham, and later became Assistant Principal with responsibility for Teaching and Learning. Kristy subsequently moved into teacher education leading professional development programmes for teachers across the sector, from Subject Leaders to Headteachers, as well as school improvement programmes. Notably, she was significantly involved in the pilot and early rollout of the Early Career Framework (ECF) during this time. Following her appointment as Head of ITT, Kristy successfully led her team through round 1 reaccreditation and an Ofsted inspection.

She is deeply invested in developing trainee teachers and the impact this has on pupil outcomes and is excited to contribute to shaping the sector as a member of the NASBTT Council.

Georgina Verrinder

Bio

Since qualifying as a primary teacher over 30 years ago, Georgina has worked in a range of teacher and senior leader roles in education. Throughout her career she has always had a passion for developing novice teachers and moved into initial teacher education in 2009, taking over leadership of Poole SCITT in 2012. In addition to her role at the SCITT, she works with other providers and is an Ofsted Inspector.

Nick Walmsley

Bio

Nick has worked in education settings for the past 25 years, and prior to this for a number of years in HE. He qualified with a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages from St. Martin’s College, Lancaster in 2005 beginning teaching in Preston. He has held a variety of senior leadership positions during his career, serving as an Assistant and Deputy Headteacher and most recently as Principal within the Bay Learning Trust.

His senior leadership responsibilities have included leading Teaching and Learning, staff development, pastoral support and behaviour. Prior to this, Nick worked at the University of Sussex whilst completing his PhD and lived in Switzerland where he worked at the University of Geneva, held a pastoral role at the International School and completed a Masters in European Studies. He has delivered on ITT programmes for the last fifteen years and is now Deputy Director at Ripley ITT where he oversees all aspects of secondary provision. He sits on the NASBTT members’ council and is currently engaged in studying for Chartered Status with the Chartered College of Teaching.

Dr Jane Kay

Dr Jane Kay has been working in education for more than 20 years, with a passion for teaching and learning and a significant focus on mathematics, numeracy and teacher education across a variety of settings from secondary school, community and family learning and studio school to sixth form, FE college and HE. Her roles have included managing curriculum for mathematics and numeracy provision, leading on teacher focussed qualifications, mentoring trainee teachers in the classroom and as a mentor for teachers pursuing ATS and Chartered status through The Education and Training Foundation. Currently working in an ITT role with the National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) across the Northwest, Dr Kay has an avid interest in research, helping to inform evidence-based practice with trainee teachers, supporting the delivery of QTS and PGCE.

Teach SouthEast and Xavier Teaching School Hub

Bio

Xavier Teach SouthEast and Xavier Teaching School Hub Director, Amy Harper, has over 19 years of experience working in primary and secondary schools in Surrey, and has spent the last 12 focusing on teachers in the early part of their career. Her role as Director of the Xavier Teaching School Hub and Xavier Teach SouthEast involves ensuring high quality training provision for a range of Pre-ITT programmes, ITT courses, ECF and NPQs.

Amy has now led the Xavier Teach SouthEast SCITT through no less than two Ofsted inspections both graded 'outstanding' in all categories and is therefore well-placed to support and advise other teacher-training providers, sharing her valuable experience in navigating the ever-changing educational landscape. Since the market review, Xavier Teach SouthEast has gone onto expand its reach within the sector across Surrey, Sussex, London, Lancashire and Berkshire, through its partnership of regional ITT hubs.

Amy has a passionate interest in ensuring that teachers at any stage in their career are supported by engaging career development programmes.
