Overview

This training explores how providers can identify, investigate and manage trainee misconduct while maintaining safeguarding, fairness and professional integrity. Using real case studies and current statutory guidance, participants will develop the confidence to manage complex misconduct concerns and disciplinary processes within ITT settings.

Participants will explore:

  • What constitutes misconduct and serious misconduct
  • The role of the Teaching Regulation Agency and recent regulatory developments
  • Key statutory guidance including KCSIE, Teachers’ Standards and safeguarding duties
  • Managing concerns, investigations and escalation processes
  • Gathering and evaluating evidence, including hearsay evidence
  • Working with external agencies including the LADO, police, TRA and DBS
  • Common investigation failures and lessons from published cases
  • Best practice for disciplinary panels and decision-making

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify potential misconduct and safeguarding risks
  • Respond appropriately to allegations and concerns
  • Conduct or oversee fair and compliant investigations
  • Apply statutory guidance and organisational policies effectively
  • Understand reporting thresholds and referral responsibilities

This training is designed for:

  • Senior leaders in ITT
  • Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs)
  • Governors and/or Trustees

It is particularly relevant for professionals responsible for safeguarding, trainee conduct, disciplinary investigations or compliance within ITT settings.


Facilitator(s)

  • Jo Palmer-Tweed BEd (Cantab), FCCT, FRSA, CEO, Essex & Thames Education

Jo has worked in education for the past 30 years.  Jo’s career has included work as an advanced skills teacher in Drama and a period working in headship.  Jo is currently The Chief Executive Officer of Essex and Thames Education, a charity whose work includes teacher-training.  Jo spent two years as an Advisor at the Department for Education and was the Strategic Lead for The National Expert Subject Advisory Groups.  Jo is a founding fellow of The Chartered College of Teaching and currently sits as a teacher misconduct chair and panellist for the Teacher Regulation Agency.
