Update on ITT Apprenticeship Assessment Plans

We are pleased to share an important update on the assessment arrangements for the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship, following confirmation from Skills England.

Assessment arrangements

Trainees will no longer be required to complete a separate end-point assessment at the end of their apprenticeship. Instead, once they have met the requirements of the ITT standards and been recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), this will mark the completion of their apprenticeship.

While this change removes duplication, there will still be a need to submit separate paperwork to ensure that trainees receive their apprenticeship qualification certificate alongside QTS.

Roles and responsibilities

Providers are now able to act as their own End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO). However, the regulator has confirmed that all EPAOs must be on the register — now called the apprenticeship assessment service. This requires providers to hold an account and add this apprenticeship in order to secure the rights needed to claim certificates.

If your organisation does not already have an account, you will need to register with the Apprenticeship Assessment Service. Support is available via the helpdesk:

In addition, the usual teacher assessment arrangements for ITT already meet the requirements for external moderation, so no further changes or additional workload are required in this area.

What happens next?

There is an ongoing review of all apprenticeship assessment plans, with the aim of removing duplication and streamlining processes. A revised plan will be published in due course, with supporting documentation to help providers navigate the changes.

Skills England has committed to working closely with ITT teams, trailblazers and providers to ensure that the new arrangements meet both provider and trainee needs, while simplifying processes wherever possible.

We will continue to keep members updated as further detail becomes available. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
