Change to bursary and scholarship eligibility for international candidates

We are changing bursary and scholarship eligibility for international candidates. The change applies to candidates who do not yet have an initial teacher training (ITT) offer for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.

From 5pm on 7 May 2026, international candidates in physics and languages must be eligible for student finance to receive a bursary or scholarship, unless they already hold an ITT offer.

We will email all non-UK nationals who have applied for physics or languages to confirm whether this change affects them. We will base this on offer data held in the Apply service.

If a candidate received an ITT offer outside the Apply service before 5pm on 7 May 2026, we will consider evidence of this.

This change aligns physics and languages incentives with other subjects for the rest of the current recruitment cycle.

We will review eligibility for international candidates before announcing incentives for the next recruitment cycle, which we expect to publish in the autumn.

If you have any questions, please contact itt.funding@education.gov.uk.
