    ‘… Given the enormous bias amongst teachers for a certain progressive mind-set, the government should be assuring itself that it is not losing potential teachers to a distaste for the traditional.’ Here we have someone blaming teachers for the shortage!! Pay is a factor – perhaps not on entry but certainly as teachers progress – but not as much of a factor as charging people to train in the first place – The £9,000 cost of training and the lack of bursaries for all subjects is stopping career changers and those already saddled with large student debts. Cancel the tuition fee and have staged student loan write-offs for years of service then you might see more people applying and staying in the profession.
