DfE

We are contacting you to make you aware of changes we are making to the International Relocation Payment (IRP).

Trainees due to start their training courses in the 2024/25 academic year will no longer be eligible to receive the IRP.

This change applies to both fee-paying and salaried trainees.

We have updated our online guidance and have today sent the email below to the candidates that we think will be affected by the change. We would be grateful if you could also pass this on to any current applicants to ensure everyone affected is fully informed of the change.

By confirming these changes now, we are ensuring trainees have the information they need to make informed decisions on making the move to England. These changes will not impact the existing bursaries and scholarships that are available to international trainees in physics and languages.

Please refer trainees and applicants to our updated Get Into Teaching guidance page. Trainees with specific queries should email teach.inengland@education.gov.uk

Teachers of physics and languages who secure jobs in England for the 2024/25 academic year will remain eligible for the IRP, but payments will be split into two £5,000 payments – teachers will be eligible and able to apply for the first payment at the start of their first year and then able to apply for the second payment at the start of their second year, provided they still meet eligibility criteria. Current academic year trainees will remain eligible to receive the IRP if they meet the previously published eligibility criteria.

We believe focussing our support on overseas physics and languages teachers in this way, and where no other financial support is available, will ensure best value for money, while maintaining positive outcomes for school children.

Copied below for information is the email we will send to overseas candidates who are currently applying, have applied, and have received or accepted an offer, for a physics or languages course.

Yours sincerely,
International Teacher Recruitment Unit
Department for Education

Dear [first name],

We are contacting you to make you aware of changes we are making to the International Relocation Payment (IRP).

Trainees due to start their training courses in the 2024/25 academic year will no longer be eligible to receive the IRP.

This change applies to both physics and languages trainees, and to trainees of both fee-paying and salaried courses.

We are writing to you now to ensure you have the information you need to make informed decisions on making the move to England. These changes do not affect the bursaries and scholarships that are available to international trainees in physics and languages: financial support for non-UK trainee teachers.

Please also refer to our updated Get Into Teaching guidance page and speak to your teacher training provider if you are concerned about being able to accept an offer or start a course you have accepted a place on. If you have specific queries, you can email teach.inengland@education.gov.uk
