STEM

If you have applicants who are due to begin their teacher training in September but would benefit from some subject knowledge development prior to starting, STEM Learning can provide this support over August. We have the following courses available:

  • Computing: The National Centre for Computing Education offers fully-funded subject knowledge courses through its flexible learning programme, the Computer Science Accelerator. This will enable applicants to develop the subject knowledge needed in computing and computer science to put them in good stead to start their teacher training. They can choose how they learn, with a wide range of live remote and online courses on offer over August and beyond, and pathways to help guide them through the programme, whatever their level of experience. Once they’ve completed the programme, they will receive a nationally recognised certificate in GCSE computer science subject knowledge and be eligible for a bursary of £920, to be paid to their school or college once they gain employment in state-funded education. They can enrol on the programme here.
  • Science: We have secondary science subject knowledge courses specifically designed for those starting their teaching career. There six courses covering KS3 and KS4 biology, chemistry and physics. Each course consists of five hour long sessions making it easy to fit in around other commitments. Courses include facilitator led interactive sessions with live Q&As allowing participants to talk to and engage with others on the course, share experiences as well as have specific queries answered.  These are complemented with participant led sessions in between where participants can focus on their own areas of development and reflect on their own learning. We will be running a bespoke subsidised instances of these courses over August based on demand. So if you have applicants who would benefit from these courses then please contact Debra Caygill (D.Caygill@stem.org.uk) by Tues 11th August indicating how many participants you would like to enrol on the courses for each science subject. If you have applicants who are due to begin their teacher training in September but would benefit from some subject knowledge development prior to starting, STEM Learning can provide this support over August.
