Birmingham City University is a thriving, modern university with a rich history in the city and wider region. With 25,000 students we are focused on teaching excellence and research excellence and place particular emphasis on practice-based programmes that support student employability. Across the institution we have revised the curriculum offer with all courses being professionally relevant and delivered in state-of-the-art facilities where we have invested over £250m in recent years.

Following the promotion of the current postholder to a senior position in another University ,we are seeking an exceptional candidate to join us as Associate Head of School, to work closely with the Head of School and their team of Heads of Departments. As a key member of the Faculty’s leadership team, you will be expected to support the Head of School in providing strategic direction and academic leadership for the School of Education and Social Work, making a considerable contribution to University and Faculty priorities.

This is an opportunity to join an expanding, successful and multi-disciplinary School of Education and Social Work. With approximately 2,500 students studying in Birmingham or with collaborative partners in England and overseas, the School has a national reputation for its work in the training and development of teachers and Social Workers and in its provision of a range of undergraduate courses for students wishing to follow a course of study in the wider Education discipline.

The School is currently restructuring  from five to four departments: Early Years and Primary Education; Secondary and post-Compulsory/Adult Education, Childhood, Youth and Community and Social Work.  Courses of study at undergraduate and postgraduate study are offered within the Departments as well as a growing emphasis on professional development and enterprise.  A successful taught doctorate is offered and there are a growing number of PhD students.  One of the strengths of the school is the support it provides for academic staff to undertake further study at doctoral level.

As an outstanding individual within the disciplines of Education and/or Social Work, you will have appropriate management and leadership experience within one or more Higher Education Institutions and/or within significant organisations in your field of expertise.  You will demonstrate clarity of understanding in respect of the policy environment within which Education and Social Work, and Universities more generally, operate in.  Whilst the key foci of your role will be agreed with the Head of School as determined by School and Faculty priorities, it is expected that your experience to date will mean that you will be able to support the Head of School – and lead as appropriate – on the student experience, portfolio, partnerships, budgets and resource management and internationalisation.

Your teaching commitment will be determined by the areas of academic specialism and experience that you bring but we would expect you to contribute at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.. Ideally, you should have or be working towards a PhD/Doctorate and will be able to demonstrate the capacity to make a valuable contribution to the body of research in your academic discipline(s).

Birmingham City University has set out its vision for transforming the prospects of individuals, organisations and society through excellence in practice-based education, research and knowledge exchange.  As the ‘University for Birmingham’, we seek to make a difference through working with and in our communities.  Our staff and student community is defined by our core values, which outline who we are as a University and how we will work with each other. Our core values are Excellence, People focused, Partnership working and Fairness and integrity.

The School of Education and Social Work at Birmingham City University is a dynamic and diverse academic community, with a strong track record of delivering excellent education at undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate levels. Our location at our City South Campus in Edgbaston, to the south of the City Centre, is home to our Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences and benefited from a £41 million extension in 2018. The campus provides a modern, vibrant learning environment which houses superb facilities, including a sports therapy clinic, nutrition science labs, subject specific classrooms equipped with the latest teaching technology, a biomedical engineering lab and a sports hall. We have a wide range of courses in health and social care, education and social work, teacher training, life sciences, and sport, and our students benefit from practical learning facilities –  a mock operating theatre and hospital wards, laboratories and sports clinics, and specialised teaching facilities.
