The migration to online teaching during the 2020/21 COVID-19 pandemic meant that colleges, schools and universities could no longer rely on in-person classroom observations for quality assurance and improvement work. Instead, they had to find alternatives to adapt to this new working environment. This presented challenges and opportunities for colleges and schools’ quality work and HE initial teacher education (ITE) providers’ assessment and support of their student teachers’ practice while on teaching placements. Many ITE providers turned to ‘unseen observation’ as an innovative alternative during the pandemic.

Since then, unseen observation has continued to be used. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence that captures its use and impact in education settings in the UK.

This project aims to fill this gap by gathering evidence to understand the use, benefits and professional impact of unseen observation from the perspectives of teachers, lecturers and leaders across the UK.

We would be grateful if you could spare just 5-10 minutes of your time to complete this short survey before it closes on 1st July: Unseen Observation Survey – Fill in form
