Our Mentor Development Modules offer a flexible suite of resources that can be embedded within existing elements of ITT providers’ mentor training to support the 2024 mentoring requirements.
Modules are available either as online self-directed study or as taught modules delivered by licenced providers. Over the course of this academic year, we have released our initial round of MDMs. All 60 modules will be available from September 2024.
We spoke to four members about their experiences of the MDMs on mentor training so far.

Immediate impact ahead of 2024-25
“I am so impressed with NASBTT’s new Mentor Development Modules,” said Sara Davidson, Director of SCITT at Oundle School. “Using the modules as part of our mentor training has been extremely successful. The evidence base applied in the modules is relevant and delegates are provided with fresh ways of looking at the different skills required for mentoring.”
Clare Giles, Course Programme Lead – West Kent and Sussex, KMT, agreed: “The NASBTT Mentor Development Modules have been an integral part of our mentor curriculum and training offer. The modules are very high quality and the asynchronous nature of them allows our mentors to engage in training at a time that is convenient for them.”
“As a Primary and Secondary SCITT we have registered all of our mentors for the NASBTT Mentor Development Modules as an optional enhancement to their mentor training this year. Mentors have completed the diagnostic assessment and are starting to take up the training offer,” added Helen Trimble, Secondary Programme Lead at Lincolnshire SCITT.

High-quality, user friendly content
“The new NASBTT Mentor Development Modules are very easy to navigate and cover a broad range of topics that are highly relevant to the mentoring role,” explained Defne Boya, Deputy Director at OTT SCITT. “Our mentors have been able to use these modules to develop their confidence, knowledge and skills in key areas. We have been very impressed with the quality and content.”
Sara continued: “Above all, the content is thought-provoking and has broadened the knowledge of our mentors. The modules are user-friendly when delivering face-to-face as the trainer packs are thorough and clear, and the activities that are built in are well thought through.
“The balance of delegate discussion and the delivery of content is spot on and the ‘badge’ award system that goes with the programme motivates our mentors towards self-improvement and self-reflection.”

Effective tracking and monitoring
“We are tracking mentors’ diagnostic results and subsequent completion of the modules to help us to identify areas of interest and gaps in understanding,” Helen revealed. “The tracking information on NASBTT Learn is very useful indeed. Through mentor meetings and communications, we have made suggestions for mentors to complete certain modules in line with our curriculum and trainee requirements.”
“The detailed information provided by the MDM platform of mentor engagement is exceptional,” Claire said. “By using these modules, NASBTT has provided me with many helpful tools to track and monitor mentor training in a highly effective and efficient way.”
She concluded: “The support and help I have had from NASBTT has been invaluable. Implementing these modules has been made so much easier because the team are always at the end of an email or on a Zoom call to help answer questions and sort out any problems.”
